ARTIST'S STATEMENT




  Long sought after in the Caribbean, Ras Mo is presently based in New Haven, Connecticut, USA.

Ras Mo trains youth leaders, community and labor organizers, school teachers, anti-violence and health educators, and artists in the U.S. and internationally. His recent engagements include the UNDP's Institute @CSW Beijing+10, CT AIDS Education and Training Center Forums, and the Institute for Community Research/Urban Arts Initiative CT statewide conference (Toolbox Series). Ras Mo also trains HIV/AIDS educators to use popular arts for education.

For the annual International Festival of Arts Ideas in Connecticut, Ras Mo designs art and media programs with social service agencies, coordinates community events, conducts residencies and supervises artists-in-residence. He teaches drumming for empowerment to women and girls, teaches theater arts and assists middle and high school students to write and perform their own plays.

In San Francisco, CA, Ras Mo directed the Popular Theater for Youth Development Project, where he trained staff and youth peer leaders from 36 area agencies. Men Overcoming Violence (MOVE) brought Ras Mo's skills to young people in high schools, middle schools and San Francisco's juvenile jail and inner city neighborhoods. Ras Mo also taughtin the Youth Treatment and Education Court's school and leadership program.

As a California Arts Council Artist-in-Residence, Ras Mo taught Caribbean Performing Arts and Popular Theater at Berkeley's La Peña Cultural Center. He directed the music component of the Career Arts Apprenticeship Program of Oakland's Urban Arts Institute.

Ras Mo has helped groups of all ages, with themes ranging from street violence and sexual abuse to the historical and economic roots of community problems and the benefits of diversity. He has worked in staff retreats, conferences, detention centers, classrooms, health clinics and women's shelters. He excels at bringing together multiple performers and media, fostering cooperation, nurturing young artists, and bringing out creativity in anyone.
